Celebrating International Women's Day
Each year Linda chooses a different international project that benefits women and girls. As Chair of the European Parliament’s International Development Committee, Linda has seen first-hand the importance the role of education can have in helping women and young girls out of extreme poverty. Since 2006 over £56,000 has been raised for international development projects and charities.
Safer Spaces Project
More than 200 women from all over Yorkshire joined Linda at her annual International Women’s Day fundraising lunch at Wortley Hall Sheffield on Friday March 10th. The event raised £5300 for the International Rescue Centre (IRC) work on the Safer Spaces Project with Syrian women and girl refugees who have fled to Jordan. The Safer Spaces provided at three camps will provide counselling against gender-based violence, healthcare, education and recreational healing activities.
The International Rescue Committee provide assistance to people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster around the world. More than 60 million people are displaced worldwide, more than half are women and children. The IRC specialise in women's protection and empowerment and child protection.
This is the tenth International Women’s Day event that Linda has hosted. You can still donate to the IRC´s Safer Spaces Project by clicking here and you can also watch a video on the work the IRC do in Safer Spaces here.
