BBC Sunday Politics Live – reaction to Theresa May’s Brexit deal

27 November 2018

Earlier this month, I was invited to take part in a discussion on BBC Sunday Politics Live about the Brexit deal. The setting for our discussion was apt: the Fox Valley Shopping Park in Stocksbridge - a £50m redevelopment of a former steel site backed by over £8m in EU funding and opened just a week before the 2016 referendum.

I was asked if the current chaos in Westminster is replicated in the EU. Not at all. Whilst our politics is dominated by Brexit, the big issues - NHS, housing, poverty, low pay - are neglected and the work of the EU goes on.

As EU leaders gathered at the weekend to sign off Theresa May’s deal, they are all too aware that back in the UK, the Tory party is bitterly split, with even cabinet ministers not backing the PM’s plan. Theresa May boxed herself into a corner with her redlines and now she can’t square the circles. What a mess!
