Visit to Olive Grove depot in Sheffield for Learning at Work Week 2018
24 May 2018
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Olive Grove Lifelong Learning Centre to mark and celebrate ‘Learning at Work Week 2018’. This is an annual national event organised every year for a week in May by Campaign For Learning to raise awareness on the importance of learning and development in work. The Learning at Work Week ran during 14 - 20 May 2018 with the theme this year being ‘Networked for Learning’.
It was great to meet with Unite the Union representatives at the Olive Grove depot to learn more about what they are doing with First Bus to support the principle of learning in work and their concept of lifelong learning and continuous training. I was impressed by the range of topics on offer at Olive Grove: from bike repair, to computer skills and literacy - I even got the chance to sit behind the steering wheel of a bus! All of this gives people here the opportunity to learn new skills which not only makes them more employable, but also increases general motivation and well-being in the workplace as well. Congratulations to Unite and First Bus for their commitment to this excellent initiative.
