International Women's Day 2018
08 March 2018
Today is International Women’s Day 2018 and each year this is a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political impact of women in our society and around the world. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the first women gaining the right to vote in the UK. For this year, the campaign theme is 'Press for Progress' to highlight the continuing need to push and demand for greater women’s equality.
I will be marking International Women’s Day 2018 with my annual fundraising dinner – as many of you may know this is something I’ve organised every year for the past 12 years. This year, as civil war ravages Syria, money will be raised tonight for “SB Overseas”, a charity supporting Syrian women and children refugees in Lebanon. Over 250 women from across Yorkshire and the Humber are expected to attend tonight’s event. In attendance will also be guest speaker Dame Glenis Willmott, former Labour Leader in Europe and Labour MPs Rachel Reeves, Mary Creagh, Gill Furniss, Holly Lynch and Melanie Onn.
This will be my last fundraising event for International Women’s Day before Brexit in March 2019. Previous events over the last 12 years have raised over £62,000 for a range of different international charities or projects that support women and girls across the world.
