Fairtrade: Empowering women and girls
06 March 2018
While international women´s day is a time for celebration is it also important to remember that for millions of women around the world the very idea of empowerment is a long way off. According to UN figures women make up more than half the world’s population, yet, women receive about 1/10th of the world´s income. Despite the fact that women are responsible for the production of over 50% of the world´s food, women that do work in farming and agriculture are highly unlikely to be landowners and they often have to deal with discrimination, abuse and unequal treatment.
That is why programmes like Fairtrade are so vital to women in developing countries. Fairtrade offers access to equal wages, health care, education, community leadership positions and even microfinance programmes. Through Fairtrade, women farmers and workers around the world are able to create more sustainable and stable livelihoods. You help further women´s empowerment in developing countries by buying Fairtrade products when you can - knowing that the money you spend is going to help other women.
