Improving the rights of ICT workers in Bangladesh

13 December 2017

I met with Christy Hoffman, the Deputy General Secretary of UNI Global, the European trade union federation for services workers, in support of the rights of information, communication and technology (ICT) workers in Bangladesh. The ICT sector is one of the most rapidly changing when it comes to working environments, organisation and technology. I have already been dealing with the issue of workers’ rights in Bangladesh. In March, I visited Bangladesh to learn more about trade union representation for garment workers, and this is an issue the Socialist Group in the European Parliament are continuing to campaign on to put political pressure on the Bangladeshi government. But I was interested to learn that in the case of the ICT workers, it is, in fact, major European companies abusing trade union rights, such as Telenor, Veon and Ericsson. There will be a group of MEPs visiting Bangladesh in the New Year, so I will continue to monitor this issue.
