Linda McAvan and Yorkshire women raise over £5300 for Syrian refugees
More than 200 women from all over Yorkshire joined Euro MP Linda McAvan at an International Women’s Day fundraising lunch at Wortley Hall Sheffield on Friday March 10th. The event raised £5300 for the International Rescue Committee work on the Safer Spaces Project with Syrian women and girl refugees who have fled to Jordan. The Safer Spaces provided at three camps will provide counselling against gender-based violence, healthcare, education and recreational healing activities.
Linda said “As Chair of the European Parliament’s International Development Committee working with refugees has been a priority for me. The Syrian civil war has had a devastating impact and caused millions of people to be displaced. The sudden upheaval due to conflict puts people- particularly women and girls- into an unimaginable level of poverty, risk and uncertainty. This money will go a long way to providing safer spaces for so many who had to flee in fear of their lives”.
This is the tenth International Women’s Day event that Linda has hosted. Over the last 10 years, these events have raised over £61,000 for charity.
