After a 2 month campaign, local Euro MP Linda McAvan has handed over a heavy bucket of foreign coins to the Alzheimer’s society to help fund their essential research. Generous local people have been handing in their coins from as far as China, Australia, Singapore and Mexico as well as places closer to home.

As the chair of the European Parliament’s International Development Committee, Linda has overseen two of the lengthy Commissioner hearings, which have taken place in Brussels this week. Linda’s Committee has had the responsibility of effectively ‘interviewing’ the Commissioner designates for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management,and for International Cooperation and Development.

Linda has joined colleagues in welcoming the decision to commit more than €150 million in EU funding to the fight against Ebola, in an urgent debate in Strasbourg today. €11.9m will go towards stopping the immediate spread of the deadly virus in West Africa, with a further €140m to build healthcare facilities in the four worst-affected countries.

Linda is asking people to drop off their left-over holiday currency at her Wath-upon-Dearne office to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. Sadly, 665,065 people in England alone are living with some form of dementia, with nearly 17,000 of those in South Yorkshire. The coins collected will be exchanged by the Alzeheimer’s society to help them fund research into the cause, cure, care and prevention of dementia.

The European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Commissioner Georgieva was invited to the European Parliament's International Development Committee to explain what the EU has been doing to combat the spread of Ebola in West Africa.
