The European Parliament late last night reached a draft deal on tobacco regulation, with agreement on increased picture warnings, regulation of e-cigarettes and a ban on products targeted at children.

I was pleased to see that there was justice this week for the 300,000 women (42,000 of those here in Britain) who were wrongly sold industrial and not medical grade silicone PIP breast implants. French courts have sentenced the founder of the PIP company to four years in prison, awarding lesser sentences to four more executives of the company.

The votes of Tory MEPs today saw the European Parliament narrowly fail to adopt a ban on deep-sea trawling. Labour MEPs supported the ban, which aimed to phase out trawling below 600 metres - recognised by scientists as by far the most destructive fishing activity - in line with their work for a more sustainable EU Common Fisheries Policy.

I agreed to participate in a 'Facebook chat' organised by the European Parliament's communications unit on the Tobacco Products Directive on Tuesday 22nd October. On Wednesday morning I was made aware that online forums had suggested that I had responded to questions posted by members of staff at the European Parliament - a fact I was unaware of at the time.

Labour MEPs continued their support for sustainable fishing today in their vote on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). The fund for 2014-2020 of around €6.5 billion is aimed at helping fishermen to comply with new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) requirements.
