More than 200 women from all over Yorkshire joined Euro MP Linda McAvan at an International Women’s Day fundraising lunch at Wortley Hall Sheffield on Friday March 10th which raised £5300 for the International Rescue Committee.

Today MEPs in the Development Committee adopted our vision on the Consensus on Development - the EU’s plan for how it should work together with National Governments to meet their commitments in the SDGs to end poverty and inequality by 2030. We will now negotiate with the European Commission and national governments to have a final agreement, hopefully by this summer. If we are to make this Consensus a success it’s clear that we need a document whose primary aim is the delivery of the SDGs - to do this, Member States and Commission programmes need to be aligned. We’re seeing more cooperation between governments and the EU on the ground, but we need a broader discussion on what the EU’s priorities are, how they relate to national priorities and where the EU can add value.

After years of vicious war in Syria, and without any safe or legal routes to get here, many refugees are continuing to make dangerous sea and land journeys to reach safety and protection in Europe. As winter firms its grip, many refugees are now enduring life in sub-zero, substandard conditions.
